Does Taking a Daily Multivitamin Improve the Health of Men?

By Arthur Kavanaugh

Men, what's your take on men's multi-vitamin supplements? Good, bad or useless? Many males are examining their daily practice of supplementing with a men's multivitamin due to the study that appeared in "Journal of the North American Medical Association".

Called "Physicians' Health Study II", male volunteers were given either a multi-vitamin or placebo and monitored from 1997-2011. Investigators discovered that guys that received multivitamins were as susceptible to heart disease as the group who took placebos.

The object of the trial study was to collect proof on whether a men's multivitamin lowered the risk of "site-specific cancer incidence or mortality". The doctors who participated in the study 1) ate healthy diets 2) body mass indexes were low 3) exercised regularly 4) took baby aspirin daily.

Or, as Duffy MacKay VP Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition summed it up, "The indisputable fact that the volunteers were already engaging in these healthy behaviors would have made it extra hard for a multi-vitamin to meaningfully contribute toward reducing any additional danger of heart problems. "

However , the analysts reported an 8% reduced risk on all cancer types for study volunteers who took a men's multi-vitamin. The study focused solely on linking men's multi-vitamins with reducing risks of cancer. Though observations show vitamins don't "meaningfully" make a contribution to reducing risks of heart problems, it did not address the imperative reason for supplementing with multiple vitamins.

Fundamentally, vitamins take up the slack springing from diet inadequacies. Did you know that an insufficiency in one vitamin can endanger your total body?

It is possible you eat the "right" foods as a part of a well balanced diet. If that's the case it's possible you get all of the vitamins you require. Possible but not likely, as the majority of people eat out often, eat manufactured foods and snack on convenience food. Very few people have the time or drive to monitor every morsel they eat!

What about Enriched Foods?

Do you know what enrichment of foods really means? It suggests some vitamins are put into the food that were removed through processing! But , not really. Take processed flour for instance. Of 22 natural nutrients that were removed as a result of heat, storage, etc. "enrichment" replaces them with vitamin D, 3 of the B vitamins, calcium and iron salts. You do the maths!

Any Guidelines for the Best Multivitamins for Men?

To avoid vitamin toxicity, never supplement with more than 100% of daily suggested requirements of any single vitamin. Your multi should not contain iron. Men only require about 8 mg iron and generally get sufficient from eating red meat.

If you're employed in an office, you may not get enough daylight; ensure you get 1,000 IU vitamin D every day. For a healthy heart, men need 400 mcg (micrograms) of folate daily. For brain health, the suggested quantity of B12 is 2.4 mcg. For vision and to support your immune system, 3,000 IU of Vitamin A is suggested. Men need 90 mg of the antioxidant , Vitamin C daily.

These are bare bones of contents in the best multivitamins for men. The final word is: in spite of studies, most males will benefit from a men's multi-vitamin.

Enjoy A Horse Performance In A Show Or At The Racetrack

By Essie Craft Riding or watching this magnificent animal is such a pleasure. It captures the hearts of a crowd to witness a horse performance of any kind. Being a spectator or holding out a hand to offer a treat will always create a wonderful memory. There are variations but the two basic types of riding are English and Western. This refers to the tack that is used, the saddle and bridle. For the English riding and jumping events, a flat saddle and bridle with double reins are used. The rider controls the animal holding the reins in two hands. Small water obstacles, brick walls and fences set up in different sequences are used in jumping competitions. In a Western show you will see the rider take the steed around the cloverleaf pattern in the barrel race or weave between the poles in the pole bending event. The Western saddle is bulkier. The saddle horn at the front is where the old time ranch hands tied their ropes as they lassoed calves for branding. In a rodeo the c...
