How To Solve Common Breastfeeding Problems

By Mayra Pierce

For first time mothers, there are unexpected instances that even though their doctors have already told them, but have only sunk in and realized it when they are already experiencing it first hand. Breastfeeding is still the best way in giving nutrition to newborn babies. And mothers have this joy in feeding them with their own physical capability.

The challenges that these first time mothers would go through is immeasurable. The feeding would tend to have a lot of common breastfeeding problems for the mothers in terms of lactation, infection, comfortability, and many others. That is why the doctors would be there to help you, but knowing first hand what to do is very beneficial.

There are latching pains that may happen for the mother. This is either caused by incorrect positioning of the mouth or by some other underlying causes. First, you need to remove the latch by sliding one finger and letting the baby release the latch. You can either wait for them to yawn or tickle their chins so you can reposition and have them latch again.

Cracked nipples could be a sign from improper pumping, latching problems, dry skin, and thrush. You can initially try the removal and repositioning for a couple of times to lessen this. Also, you can use the milk to heal the cracked areas and let it air dry. Never use products in the house aside from water or the milk for moisturization of the nipples.

Clogged or plugged ducts may be an underlying symptom for an infection if it comes with feverish tendencies and aches that stretches for long period of time. If that is not the case and it is only redness and a light bearable sore feeling, you can try massaging it to increase milk flow and movement. Apply warm compress as well.

The lactation can sometimes be in a large amount and this would tend to give the baby an uncomfortable or difficult time for them to latch on the breast. Hand express the milk first until it becomes softer before letting the baby latch. If the nursing is more frequent, it is then less likely for it to engorge.

An infection which is caused by bacteria is mastitis. It comes along with fever and then breast pains. There are various causes for this and it includes plugged ducts, cracked skin, or engorgement. This can be solved through hot compression, antibiotics, and frequent expressing of the milk.

Another type of infection is thrush with is caused by fungi or yeast. This can be initially found around the mouth of the baby which will be passed on to the breast of the mother. These are rashes and itchiness and you need to consult your doctor for recommended anti fungal creams you can use. Apply this to both on the baby and on the breast for them to heal at same times.

It is normal to have a prickly needle like sensation when feeding. But if this lasts for a longer amount of time and the sensation becomes like a thousand needles poking at your breast, then this is an indication of an infection. Get the necessary medicines and remedies from your doctor when this happens.
