Teeth Bleaching Offers Patients A Brand New Smile

By Sherry Gross

People who long for a whiter smile, should consult their dentist about professional whitening. Teeth bleaching provides an effective way for many people to enjoy whiter teeth and can be done either as an in-office procedure or by using a take-home kit available from the dentist. Commercial products cannot offer the same results that these professional grade treatments can.

Before a dentist will recommend a patient for whitening, he or she will examine the teeth and determine if the person is a good candidate for this procedure. Patients who have artificial frontal restorations, intrinsic stains on the inner layer of the teeth, or have very sensitive teeth or worn enamel may be better suited to another approach.

An in-office whitening treatment involves first applying a protective shield or gel to the gums, and next treating every tooth with a bleaching agent that will then be activated using a special blue light. This process takes about an hour and provides quick results, if the patient desires a lighter shade a second treatment will be needed.

Patients who choose the take-home kit will first visit the dentist to have a mouth impression made, which is sent to a dental lab where a custom-made whitening tray set will be fashioned. On the next appointment the patient will be given the trays, along with the bleaching agent, and the dentist will explain how to use it correctly. Generally, the trays need to be worn for at least a half-hour daily, over a period of two weeks.

There are many reasons to choose this option, for one, it improves a person's confidence and self-image, making one look younger and more attractive. It's a versatile approach that is highly customizable and can easily be combined with other cosmetic dental procedures if needed, and above all it gives dramatic results in a short time.

The relatively short treatment time is very appealing to most patients. Those who choose to undergo the in-office approach will often experience teeth that are as many as eight shades whiter in only an hour. Although the at-home system does take longer, it does provide effective whitening and also gives patients the convenience of being able to go about their usual activities at the same time.

It is the choice of many patients also because it tends to cost less than other procedures such as crowns, porcelain veneers, and bridgework, and it is also less invasive. A safe procedure, there is still the slight risk that some people will experience irritation if they are sensitive to the whitening formula. These professional treatments carry less risk of side effects than their commercial counterparts do however.

Results of the whitening can vary from one patient to another depending on several factors. The extent and depth of the staining, natural enamel shade, and method of whitening used all affect the final outcome of the procedure. The patient's lifestyle habits will also influence the results as well and can contribute to how quickly they will fade. Smoking, drinking coffee, tea, or red wine, and certain medications can cause new stains over time.
